OGS presented its 29th annual conference at University Plaza Hotel on September 25-26, 2009. Our featured speaker was Dr. Thomas W. Jones, who received rave reviews from those in attendance. His years of genealogical research and teaching were evident throughout his presentations on methodology.
The conference kicked off on Friday with a presentation by Dr Jones on “How to Avoid Being Duped by the Internet.”  He showed us that while there is increasingly bountiful information available, much is erroneous or of unknown accuracy. He also explained how online genealogical information, even if its accuracy is unknown, can lead to valid conclusions about our ancestors. His Saturday sessions continued to show how family historians can dig into records and combine what we find from several sources to yield usable and accurate information. Four interesting “mini-sessions” were also conducted covering beginning genealogy, photographs, and using FamilySearch and GenSmarts. Additional sourcebooks containing information about the presentations and registrants are available for sale.
This year, we introduced two online innovations. Participants could register online using PayPal. Additionally, all registrants could download the sourcebook early to give them a better idea of the topics being presented.  Registration for the conference was recorded at 168.
A successful conference is not possible without help from all the dedicated volunteers, and this year over forty people stepped forward to offer their time and talents. A big Thank You to our volunteers, and to all who attended our conference. We appreciate your participation and hope to see you next year.

Gravestone Preservation Workshop

Historic Squibb Cemetery,

Welcome:  Historical Societies, Tombstone Preservationists, or anyone interested in repairing tombstones or upkeep of our historic cemeteries.

Dr. C. Mark Rose of Richmond, Missouri, and Rose Marie Jones of Willard, Missouri, will be hosting a one-day, hands-on workshop in gravestone preservation.  Mr. Jonathan Appell, Monumental Mason from Connecticut, will be demonstrating how to repair old gravestones, slow or reverse weather-related deterioration, and stabilize stones, which have begun to lose their integrity.

“Due to the economic conditions currently existing throughout America, very limited, city, state, or federal funding is available. Many non-profits have also fallen on hard times. It is therefore my mission and intent to offer these workshops at a very reasonable rate, enough funds can be generated to hold a workshop, by those attending each event, paying a modest fee. In other words: workshops, by the people, for the people.”
“It has been our mission to conserve, preserve, educate and increase public appreciation for the history that can be found in the world's gravestones, monuments, architecture and sculpture.  We have been able to accomplish this in concert with regional and local governments, municipalities, historic trusts, foundations and societies, along with private individuals, heirs and descendants.”
This is a one-day workshop starting at 9:00a.m. and ending by 4:00p.m., or whenever finished.  The workshop will be held at Squibb Cemetery 6 miles West of Springfield, MO.  Take Old Route 66, Highway 266, west to Yeakley Chapel.  Turn North (right) on Farm Road 65 to Farm Road 132, then turn West (left) to Farm Road 63, turn North (right) to the cemetery– watch for signs.

There are many Redfern, Rose, and Squibb families buried there.  The cemetery is about two acres and has over 75 graves; it is an active burying ground.  The cemetery is one of the oldest in Greene County.  The first burial was in 1838 and has examples of stones in a variety of listing, sinking and disrepair.  Appell will use these stones to demonstrate various techniques and products to help restore and maintain these stones.
If you are interested in attending the workshop, or have any questions, please call 816-770-5509 or Rose Jones This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 417-8332351.
A $20 plus donation is suggested.

Photographing and taping is allowed.
Bring your lawn chairs, a beach umbrella, a cooler with your lunch and beverages, and gloves for hands on training.

Toilet Facilities available but not running water.
