INDEX TO SPECIAL COLLECTIONS HOUSED IN THE OZARKS GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY LIBRARY
Ozarks Genealogical Society is pleased to be able to offer this downloadable file containing the index for special collections housed at the Ozarks Genealogical Society Library. The index is in pdf format* and is every-word searchable except for handwritten charts. Read below for a description of the items contained in the collections.
About the general collection
These collections fill several file cabinets in the OGS Library. The majority of the twenty (20) plus years of collections were donated to the society after the researchers' deaths. Generally the records focus on family histories with an emphasis in the southwest Missouri geographical area. The introduction to the collection at the beginning of this file provides a good summary of the contents of the collection.
About Opening the Ozarks files
A separate four-drawer file cabinet houses the working files of current society member and professional genealogist Marsha Hoffman Rising, CG, FASG whose research of the first 1000 families who purchased land in the Springfield Land Office was published in 2005. The four-volume compilation Opening the Ozarks: First Families in Southwest Missouri, 1835-1839 is available for research in the OGS Library or in the local history section of the Library Center in Springfield, Missouri. These files contained in this special collection contain more material than could be used in the publication including additional generations of the families, pension files, federal cash entry files, and court records. However, there are some files of the same surname that Rising later determined were not the persons who had purchased the land. Any researcher with early roots in the Ozarks should investigate this collection.
If you are unable to visit the library personally, copies of specific materials in the collection may be obtained through volunteer staff. Search fee is $10.00 plus cost of copies at 20c per copy and postage. Send your request to

One unique source available locally for genealogy can be found at the OGS Library. Many genealogical societies across the country publish extracts of local materials whether that be transcriptions of local records, cemeteries, Bible records, or other unique items such as letters and journal entries. The OGS Library has a large number of such publications which have been acquired through subscriptions or donations. Most back issues are bound together by volume and are available for check-out to OGS members. How can you find out if the library has something that would be useful? One way is just to come and browse the shelves. The periodicals for a particular area can be found shelved among other books of a given locale. However, a more efficient method for searching is available. PERSI (Periodical Source Index), created by the Allen County Library in Indiana, is a listing of titles of articles appearing in genealogical publications. It is accessible through the Springfield-Greene County Library or Christian County Library (click on links, library card number required for access) through their subscriptions to HeritageQuest Online. Once you've accessed PERSI, you can enter names or locations. Since only the titles of articles are indexed, it is less likely you'll find the name of an ancestor searching by name than if you looked for articles of information in places in which your ancestors lived. Once you've found the articles, you're interested in reading, look through this list of OGS Library periodicals to see if the publication is part of our holdings. If it's not, you can talk to the libarians at The Library Center's Local History and Genealogy department to get the article through inter-liibrary loan.
