2010 Annual Conference
OGS will hold its 30th annual genealogy conference September 10-11, 2010, at the Clarion Hotel in Springfield. Our featured speaker will be J. Mark Lowe, CG, FUGA. Mark is a full-time professional genealogist, author, and teacher who researches primarily in original records and manuscripts throughout the South. He is also an instructor at the Institute for Genealogical & Historical Research (Samford University) and the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy. Mark your calendars now and plan to attend.

The annual spring dinner will be Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at the St. John's Cancer Center, 2055 S. Fremont, Springfield, MO. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the buffet dinner will be available at 6:30. Cost is only $10.50. David Richards of MSU will be talking to us about Treasuring Rare Books. On April 19-21 join fellow OGS members on the annual research trip. We'll be traveling to the Midwest Genealogy Center and the National Archives branch office in the Kansas City area. More information about the library and the archives will be presented at the March OGS meetings. We will be carpooling (we need drivers!) and plan to leave early enough Monday morning, April 19, to arrive at the library by 9:00 a.m. The cost of transportation will be between you and your driver. We will be staying at the Higher Ground Hotel, located at 200 N. Delaware (just off Truman Road) in Independence, MO. The rooms are doubles and non-smoking. Up to four people may stay in one room. The room rate is $71.88 which includes tax. Payment is due in advance for the hotel room. A 50% deposite is due to OGS by March 10. Final payment is due April 6. Download registration form here. Marsha Hoffman Rising, CG, FASG, the well-known author of Opening the Ozarks, Ozarks Genealogical Society member, and Springfield resident died Thursday morning. Her obituary appeared in the Springfield News-Leader. Dick Eastman posted additional information here along with the obituary that appeared in the News-Leader.

Genealogy-Beyond Basics is being offered through the OTC Continuing Education Department. The classes will meet at the OGS Library, 534 West Catalpa, from 7-9 pm on Thursday evenings from March 25 - April 22. A fee is charged and preregistration is required through Ozarks Technical Continuing Education Deparment, phone 417-447-8888. You may also register online or at 800 E. Central Street in Springfield. This course is offered by the OGS Education Committee.

February 1 ~ PDF and Genealogy
- Personal Document Files (PDF) have become the de facto method for publishing everything from utility bills to family histories. This session will look at searching, browsing, printing and creating this type of files for our genealogical research.
