From the Art Museum website notes on Missouri Made Quilts, 1850–1940 Featuring nine quilts made in Missouri, this beautiful exhibition complements Quilts in a Material World: Selections from the Winterthur Collection. Missouri Made Quilts focuses on work created from the mid-19th century through the first revival of quilt making in the early 20th, and it shows the continuing influences of technology. The styles of quilts produced during this period also reflect social, economic, and political changes. The Post-Dispatch comments The exhibition offers a view of American quilt making's roots and how quilting evolved from an avocation of wealthy women of leisure to a broader and more inclusive middle-class pastime.

Press Release Branson Chamber of Commerce The family-friendly vacation destination Branson, Missouri has recently been honored as a "Top Pick" among lakeside spots by Midwest Living© in the recent article 24 Best Family Reunion Spots. Midwest Living is a popular bimonthly publication that provides 3.8 million readers with trusted information on topics such as home, family, travel, and food. The article addresses the "growing trend (more than a third of us will travel for family reunions in 2008)" of family travel. The idea to publish a travel article focused solely on family reunions spurred directly from readers' interests, which came to Midwest Living in the form of questions much different from traditional travel inquiries, according to Senior Travel Editor Barbara Morrow. "People want to reconnect … and travel with their families," she says. Branson was visited by Midwest Living last June, and scored an outstanding 5 out of 5 stars in 3 factors rating appeal, lodging choices, and planning help. Branson's 3-star rating in the location factor was also the top rating given among lakeside spots. These ratings earned Branson the "Top Pick" for the lakeside spots category. Four Branson lodging facilities received top honors, and Table Rock Lake, Silver Dollar City, Thousand Hills Resort, and the Branson Chamber of Commerce were mentioned as key aspects of Branson's award-winning experience.

Ancestry.com Announcement Regarding Online Family Tree PDF print email

Robert Eastman pointed to this press release last month...
Since 1999, our Online Family Tree system has helped almost 2 million people build family trees, upload GEDCOM files and add their trees to Ancestry World Tree. We’ve maintained this system for some time, but the it’s finally become outdated and will soon be replaced with the Ancestry Member Tree system introduced in July 2006. We realize this is a bitter disappointment for some of you who have worked in our Online Family Tree system for years. This is an important step for us that lets us focus all our ability on creating one great system for everyone to use. At nearly 8 years old, Online Family Tree is an ancient product (in internet years anyway), and we feel it is important to move everyone to the new system while this one is still running. If we prolonged this, it would be much more difficult to do this while the OFT system is on life-support. What does this mean for you? For those that have a file in the old Online Family Tree system, you’ll be able to access your tree in that system through about March 2008. Between now and then you can easily transition your family tree file to the Ancestry Member Tree system and get used to it before the Online Family Tree system expires. We know how much time and energy you’ve put into your tree and we’ve done our best to make sure you don’t lose a bit of it as you change systems. There are basically two phases to this transition period for Online Family Tree:
If this effects you, I'd suggest visiting the original posting that includes a chart identifying the differences between the services. There is also an active set of comments related to the potential impact, including issues of privacy.

Ethics in Publishing Family Histories PDF print email

Facts can’t be copyrighted. I was surprised when a friend of mine who practices copyright law first passed this information on to me. Reflecting on this statement, it makes sense. How could anyone claim copyright to the name of the ship on which their immigrant ancestor sailed, or the date of death of their great great grandfather, or the amount that an ancestor paid in monthly rent? Recent legal opinion has even decided that certain compilations of facts, such as telephone directories, are not subject to copyright. But what about compiled genealogies? What can I include in a published genealogy without infringing on someone else’s rights? And what rights do I have to the compilations I produce? If you'd like to learn more, visit Steve's Genealogy Blog to read his entire article. Hat tip to Eastman.
